Let’s face it, life can get boring. You make all of these plans and dreams but most of the time you just fall into routine and join the dreaded “daily grind”.
With the stresses of modern life, it is very easy to forget how beautiful life is and how grateful we should be. Even life’s simplest things can be beautiful but unfortunately we often take them for granted. That is why I have made this post of 25 Affordable ways to Romanticise your Life.
Romanticising your life simply means you will find joy in the little things, make an effort to be more present and try to attain that converted “main character energy”. Imagine you are the lead in a movie. You know who you are, you put yourself first and great things seem to unfold around you.
Why should you Romanticise your Life?
Although it is not essential, romanticising your life brings so much more depth, meaning, and vibrancy to everyday existence. Embracing the beauty of the little things allows you to see the world through a different lens—one coloured with appreciation and a child-like wonder.
Since I started to romanticise my life at the beginning of the year, it has encouraged me to really cherish the little moments and now I find myself staring up at the clouds everyday instead of burying my head in my phone.
By becoming the main character of your story, you can cultivate a more positive mindset, nurture your relationships, and create more lasting memories even on seemingly boring days.
Romanticising your life isn’t about romantic relationships; it is the epitome of self-love and will ultimately change the way you think about and interact with the world. It encourages you to treat yourself with kindness and to appreciate the intricate details of both yourself and your life that often go unnoticed.
Who wouldn’t want to transform the mundane into the extraordinary?
Make each day a celebration and soon your life will be bursting with colour and happiness.
How to Romanticise your Life
1. Picnic in the Park
Pack a basket with your favourite snacks and enjoy a cosy solo picnic in the park with your favourite book. Spending time outside is a great way to reconnect with the world and understand your place in it. And what is more romantic than a picnic?
2. Make a Playlist for Every Occasion
I always have a song in my head. What is more “main character” than having the perfect song playing at each moment? Create a playlist for when you are celebrating and make one for those quiet, reflective moments. Whatever you are doing or feeling, I guarantee that there is a song out there for you. Create the soundtrack to your life and you really will become the main character of your story.
3. Stargazing
When I was studying Physics, there was nothing I loved more than closing the textbooks, taking a blanket into the garden and gazing up at the stars. There’s something awe-inspiring about the night sky that brings a sense of wonder as well as an incredible perspective to life.
4. Write Letters to your Past and Future Selves
Writing handwritten letters always seems quite magical. By writing one to your past self you can reflect on what you have achieved and let go of the things you might regret. You can then express your dreams and goals in a letter to your future self. One day you can look back on them and maybe even repeat the exercise when you are in a new stage of life.
5. Get Outdoors for a Daily Walk
Take leisurely walks in nature. Whether it’s a beach, a forest or a garden, connecting with natural can be invaluable for your mental, physical and emotional well-being. There is something very personal and healing about walking in nature, so take some time out and embrace the world around you.
6. Have a Home Spa Night
Create a spa-like atmosphere at home. Light scented candles, play soothing music, and pamper yourself with a bath or a face mask. Treat yourself and take the time out that you deserve. You could even have a cheeky glass of wine to complete the main character aesthetic!
7. Smile More
This sounds so simple, but it is alarming how many people go through their day without a single smile. I know a lot of the time, life is stressful and you may not feel like smiling, but this is where the phrase “fake it until you make it” really comes in. It sounds ridiculous, but since I started purposely smiling more, I have actually become happier! Try it! And let me know if it works for you!
8. Explore your Own Town
Adventures do not have to cost the Earth. I bet you that there is some places near you that you have always said “we should go there sometime” but never have. Spend the day exploring your own town. Become a tourist, find a new café and enjoy some fresh air and new scenery.
9. Solo Book Shop Date
Spend an afternoon at a book shop. There is nothing like the feeling of taking time out of your day to be amongst books. Explore different genres, sit and read or even just take time to breathe in the tranquillity.
10. Create the Perfect Morning Routine
I personally love to wake up a bit earlier so I can take time out in the morning to go through my morning rituals. If you need a little extra help with getting up early then make sure to check out my post on how to become a morning person. Take the morning to workout, journal or even just get out into the fresh air. Starting the day off right will put you in a positive mindset for the rest of the day.
11. Dance around the Kitchen
Cooking after a long day at work can often feel like a slog. Turn on your favourite music and dance the time away! Let loose and enjoy the moment, free of judgement and self-consciousness.
12. Enjoy the Rain
When you are warm and cosy in bed or inside, there is something about watching or listening to the rain that is calming for the soul. Take a quiet moment to breathe in the wonder of nature and stop thinking of a rainy day as a disappointment.
13. Practice Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness is an excellent exercise to romanticise your life as you have to become truly present. It’s a calming experience that can help you connect with yourself and your surroundings. You could follow guided meditation or just take 10 minutes out of your day to sit and just exist with yourself and your thoughts.
14. Take a Photo everyday
Is it just me that loves the memories that pop up in my gallery that were taken “on this day 1 year ago”? I think this is an amazing and simple way to document your life. Take photos of the highlight of your day and soon you will have a whole year of great memories to look back on. On quiet days I like to take pictures of the sky or trees on my dog walk.
15. Stop saving things for “Best”
So many of us have outfits that we have never worn just because they are earmarked for a special occasion. Having done this for many years, I can tell you that there is almost never enough special occasions for that! Start using the things you are saving and make everyday feel a little more special.
16. Start Journaling
Takes some time each night to write down what has happened in your day, how you felt and what you are grateful for. This is a great way to practice gratitude and keep a diary of everything that happens in your life. At the end of the year, you will have an amazing record of everything you achieved and loved throughout the year.
17. Go to your Favourite Café
Sitting alone in a café, drinking your favourite drink, perhaps with a sneaky slice of cake- that to me is the epitome of romanticising your life. Being able to be happy and confident in your own company, especially in public gives off major main character energy. You will also have time to think, reflect and just enjoy the moment.
18. Get Cosy
I was astounded when I realise how many people get home after work or university and just stay sat in their regular clothes! There is something so comforting and joyful about getting cosy when you finally have some time to yourself. So get your PJs out, get comfy or even invest in a new blanket. Getting comfy with your favourite book is one of life’s little joys.
19. Invest in some Fairy Lights or Candles
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make your space feel more warm and homely. Some fairy lights or a candle or two can instantly elevate your space without breaking the bank. Imagine how dreamy your evening routine could become!
20. Disconnect from Technology
Dedicate some time each day to disconnect from technology completely. Phones and social media are the easiest way to lose time and prevent yourself from living in the moment. Engage in real conversations with loved ones or simply start to enjoy your own quiet company without any distractions.
21. Re-read your Favourite Book
There is something so comforting and romantic about nostalgia. And reading a good book is one of the best ways to relax and take time for yourself. So why not combine both feelings and re-read your favourite book? Relive the love, the drama and the laughter. Bonus points if you have a favourite reading spot to go to.
22. Sit in the Sun for 5 minutes
Feeling the earth beneath your feet and the sun on your skin is the best way to ground yourself and let go of life’s little stresses. Breathe in the fresh air and take a moment to bask in the sunlight. (Make sure to use sufficient sun protection, especially if you are a redhead like me!).
23. Consume Inspiring Content
One of the best ways to get out of the everyday slump is to get inspired. Research something that really resonates with you and your dreams. Read books, listen to podcasts or even go to an inspirational speech. Find that one thing that sets your soul on fire and your whole life will change for the better.
24. Plan a Dream Vacation
Even if you can’t go right away, planning your dream vacation can be a wonderful exercise. Research destinations, activities, and create an itinerary filled with everything you love. You could even make a mood-board. You never know, it could serve as great inspiration to you in day to day life.
25. Express Gratitude
Every day, express gratitude for everything you have. Hug your loved ones, celebrate your achievements and try to see the best in everything. Practicing gratitude will really transform your perspective and encourage you to appreciate even the smallest things in your life.
